Berks County Community Foundation luncheon honors recipients of $610,000 in scholarships

May 25—The Berks County Community Foundation held its annual scholarship luncheon Thursday at the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in Reading.

Among those honored were the 11 high school seniors who were winners of the Reading Eagle's Berks' Best 2023 Awards: London Cerullo of Brandywine Heights, Trevor Bilodeau of Wilson, Charlotte Baumgard of Schuylkill Valley, Irene Portillo Poblete of Reading, RuoHan Chen of Fleetwood, Denise Jean of Daniel Boone, Abigail Robinson of Conrad Weiser, Benjamin Zobian of Wyomissing, Danielle Radosh of Wilson, Cassidy Smith of Schuylkill Valley and Kelly Fox of Twin Valley. Nine of the winners were in attendance.

Each winner receives a $500 check from the BCCF.

"Today we are awarding and recognizing scholarships in the amount of $610,000 to the recipients that are here," said Kevin K. Murphy, BCCF president. "That brings the total amount of scholarships the Community Foundation has awarded since 1994 to $12,955,378."

Dr. Susan Looney, president of Reading Area Community College, was the keynote speaker. She detailed her progression from high school dropout who became a professional harness racer to getting her GED and then associate, bachelor, master and doctorate degrees from college.

"Go out there and make a positive difference in the world and may this scholarship be the first stop on a lifelong journey of learning, growth and fulfillment," Looney said in her closing remarks.
