Berkeley woman, 23, arrested for allegedly stabbing mother to death

(KRON) — A 23-year-old woman was arrested and charged with murder on Sunday in connection to the fatal stabbing of a woman identified as her mother. The Berkeley Police Department received a call at around 2:45 p.m. reporting a stabbing at an apartment on the 1300 block of University Avenue.

According to Berkeley PD, officers arrived at the scene and detained a subject on the property. An investigation led officers to discover a victim with stab wounds inside the apartment. The Berkeley Fire Department arrived and declared the victim deceased.

Homicide detectives arrived to further investigate while the Alameda County Coroner’s Office took custody of the deceased victim.

An investigation determined that the initial subject detained — a 23-year-old woman — was the suspect. Police determined the suspect was the daughter of the victim — a 60-year-old woman.

“Our condolences go out to the family of the victim. We ask that the public and the media allow the family time to grieve as the investigation continues,” said Berkeley PD in a statement.

The suspect was arrested for murder and booked at Santa Rita Jail. BPD said it will not release any further details until charging has concluded.
