The Berkeley County Sheriff's Department is investigating a "drowning incident" on Sunday evening that left a 1-year-old in critical condition, according to a department news release.

"Although this investigation is ongoing, it appeared that this incident happened in the backyard pool of the home," the release states.

Washington County history: When 'thieving scoundrels' stole their horses, these locals organized to find them.

A deputy responded to a Talbott Avenue home in the Martinsburg area shortly before 7:30 p.m. Sunday, the release states.

"It was learned" that the toddler was at Berkeley Medical Center, the release states.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this trying time," Sheriff Rob Blair said in the release.
