According to a statement from the department Friday, staff removed four benches and six picnic tables along the south side of the San Diego River last Thursday.

It cited community input and illicit activity in the surrounding areas as well as an increase in litter, biological waste, drug paraphernalia and graffiti as reasons for the removal of the structures.

The department said because of these issues, the benches and tables were left “largely unusable,” adding that it works to “ensure clean and safe spaces for all visitors and will continue to operate in the public’s best interest.”
