Paddington's Ben Whishaw has found his next movie project.

Via Deadline, it's been revealed that the Golden Globe-winning actor will portray the late American photographer Peter Hujar, who up until his death in 1987 stood as an influential figure across Manhattan's artistic scene.

This untitled biopic has director Ira Sachs attached, who recently worked with Whishaw on romantic drama Passages.

Russian Doll's Stella Schnabel is also in the cast, with Whishaw telling the aforementioned publication that it'll be a "very small, very intimate little film".

Hujar's photographic subjects in 1970s and 80s New York included Fran Lebowitz, Susan Sontag and David Wojnarowicz - famously rendered in monochrome.

Following his death from complications from AIDS, the artist's shots have reportedly been collected by none other than Elton John.

Whishaw has previously opened up about his sexuality in an interview with The Sunday Times.

"There was a moment in my early twenties when I did not feel very good about myself. It was to do with my sexuality and not knowing how to be myself and hating myself. I did know [my sexuality], I just couldn't tell anyone," the Fargo season 4 star said.

"I don't think [sexuality] is the be-all and end-all, and since revealing my sexuality I haven't had any negative effects."

He went on to suggest that the majority of us are on a "spectrum" when it comes to sexuality - "if we're honest about these things" - but hates the whole constellation of labels that society applies.

It was revealed in 2021's No Time to Die that Whishaw's James Bond character Q is also gay.
