If the sight of Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger throwing passes at practice on Tuesday–just nine days after undergoing outpatient surgery to repair a torn meniscus suffered in the loss to Miami on October 16–isn’t good news, I don’t know what to call it.

After the initial diagnosis and surgery, there was optimism that Roethlisberger could return in no later than three weeks, which would have put him right on schedule for the huge match-up in Baltimore against the Ravens on November 6.

However, last Wednesday, reports began to circulate that, because of some left-over issues with an MCL sprain and bone bruise he suffered in Week 3 of 2015, Roethlisberger could miss four to six weeks.

Yet, days later, during the CBS broadcast of Pittsburgh’s clash with the Patriots at Heinz Field this past Sunday (a 27-16 loss), analyst Phil Simms said Roethlisberger told him he could have played in that game had it been the playoffs.

You couple Simms’ revelation with the practice reps on Tuesday, and it’s easy to assume that Roethlisberger will be ready for Baltimore on November 6.

Think about it, why would head coach Mike Tomlin, the team doctor and the trainers allow Roethlisberger to do anything of a physical nature on a week when the team isn’t even preparing to play? Why would they risk their valuable quarterback further damaging his surgically repaired knee if he wasn’t ahead of schedule with regards to the healing process?

With the Steelers currently in first place, having Roethlisberger back in the fold for the Ravens game will be vital. Pittsburgh is one game ahead, and a victory in Week 9 would put a fierce AFC North rival on the ropes with still eight weeks left in the season.

The Steelers are worried about a bye, but a division championship comes before that. The sooner Ben Roethlisberger can come back and help achieve that goal, the better the chances are of it becoming a reality.
