Ben Miles, Les Miles' son, decides to transfer from Nebraska
It’s not easy being a fullback in 2018.
Well, it was never easy being a fullback; it’s arguably the most physically demanding position in football. But it’s especially difficult when the position is being phased out in the world of spread, pass-happy offenses. Ben Miles experienced that head-on this spring.
Miles, the son of former LSU head coach Les Miles, landed a scholarship to Nebraska a few years back when Mike Riley was leading the Huskers’ program with a pro-style offense. Now, with Scott Frost in place as head coach, there is not much room for a fullback.
Miles admitted as much when announcing his plans to transfer on Wednesday.
“I would like to announce my release from the University of Nebraska. I would like to thank Coach Riley and his staff for recruiting me and giving me such a great opportunity to play at Nebraska,” Miles wrote. “Also, I’d like to thank Coach Frost and his staff. I’ve enjoyed learning from them throughout spring ball. The program is in great hands, however it was no longer the right fit for me schematically.”

Like quarterback Patrick O’Brien concluded last month, Miles knew he was not a fit in Frost’s up-tempo spread offense — an attack that does not even use a traditional fullback. Miles, the only scholarship fullback on the roster, redshirted the 2017 season. If he transfers to another FBS program, he will have to sit out again in 2018 to satisfy the NCAA’s transfer rules. From there, he will have three years of eligibility remaining.
According to Rivals.com, Miles had offers from Boston College, LSU, Michigan State, Purdue and others as a three-star recruit coming out of Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
