Breast milk is good for babies, but a lot of new mothers who want to breastfeed their babies find that they have trouble producing enough milk, and turn to food supplements to try to boost their milk supplies. One of the latest supplements rumored to increase milk production is probably going to be extremely popular, because it’s a flavor of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.

According to Scary Mommy’s Valerie Williams, Ben & Jerry’s “Oat of this Swirled” flavor is a brown sugar ice cream flecked with chocolate and big chunks of oatmeal cookies. The oatmeal cookies are what is giving this new ice cream its reputation for being a potential galactagogue, or food that increases milk production in breastfeeding mothers.

The oats in the cookies are the source of the idea that the ice cream could boost milk production. Oats have long been a rumored galactagogue. Of course, this means that a more efficient means of increasing lactation would be to eat bowls of oatmeal, but that does not necessarily sound like as much fun as eating ice cream with oatmeal cookies in it.

There’s no evidence that eating Ben & Jerry’s Oat of this Swirled will actually increase milk production, but it does sound pretty tasty.
