Beloved Burrito Chain Reveals Its Top-Secret Guacamole Recipe

Chipotle gained favor in the hearts and minds of label-conscious burrito lovers when the company became the first national chain to go GMO-free last week. Now it’s winning over even more fans by revealing the recipe for one of its most popular toppings: guacamole.

“We know that you know that guac is extra, but have you ever thought about what makes it so delicious?” read the company’s website on Sunday. Along with listing the ingredients and directions, it also offered a how-to photo series to help those at home create the perfect batch.

Anyone who’s added the creamy topping to a burrito bowl or asked for a side to go along with some chips has seen the cost of the relatively inexpensive meal jump quite a bit. Adding guacamole to a non-veggie burrito costs an extra $1.95, and with Chipotle’s prices already rising, consumers may want to trim the bill where they can.

The fast-casual chain upped its prices an average of 6.5 percent last summer, citing the rising costs of avocados and dairy products. At one point, the company even threatened to remove guacamole from its menu if prices continued to climb owing to to a shortage from drought-stricken California avocado farmers.

Even though the guacamole price appears static for now, beef prices are set to increase by 4 to 6 percent later this year. Skipping the guacamole, especially when it can easily be made at home, might just be the easiest way for consumers to combat rising costs.

Of course, re-creating the burrito is another task entirely. Thrifty eaters might consider smuggling their homemade guac into Chipotle restaurants. No word on whether the line cooks will add it into your burrito before wrapping it up, though.
