Belarus wants to implement death penalty for treason: law passes second reading

The Chamber of Representatives of Belarus approved the bill with changes to the Criminal Code of Belarus after the second reading. The bill suggests implementing the death penalty for treason.

Quote: "The bill suggests: the possibility of implementing the capital punishment of death penalty for officials in public office, and persons with a status of a military who committed a crime corresponding to Article 356 ‘Treason’ of the Criminal Code of Belarus."

Details: The law also suggests increasing the fine for committing crimes "against peace and safety of people, civil security, traffic safety, health of population and state" from 5,000 to 50,000 base figures.

Moreover, the document increases the term of detention of an individual suspected of treason, conspiracy with the aim of seizure of state power, spying, terrorist act or diversion to 10 days, and the term during which this individual can be accused to 20 days.

The bill of the law "About changing codes for criminal liability" was approved after the first reading on 7 December 2022.

The bill of the law is yet to be approved by the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus (the upper chamber of the Belarusian Parliament), and then the bill must be signed by the self-proclaimed President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko.

Belarus is the only country in Europe which is still using the death sentence as punishment. The execution is carried out through shooting.
