Behind the Lens: Inside the ‘Great March of Return’

For the past few weeks, photographer Fabio Bucciarelli has been on the ground in Gaza City covering the escalating conflict between Palestinians and Israeli soldiers through photos and video. The violence started March 30, when Palestinians kicked off a planned six weeks of demonstrations called “the Great March of Return.” The peak of the demonstrations will come on May 15, when Palestinians mark Nakba Day, or “catastrophe day,” recalling the day after the State of Israel was established in 1948 when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were driven from their homes. The U.S. Embassy is also set to open in Jerusalem on May 14 Israeli Independence Day, which was planned after President Trump announced that the U.S. considered Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, angering Palestinians, as they also claim Jerusalem as their capital.
