'This Is the Beginning of Her End': Dying Drought-Stricken Koala Comforted

A rescue group has been providing palliative care for a dying koala, at a center in Port Stephens, New South Wales, as seen in this video uploaded to Facebook on January 6.

Port Stephens Koalas named the koala Flat Tops Dessie. They said the “dear old lady” had not “coped with extreme heat. She has come in heat stressed and dehydrated from a drought-affected area.”

Dessie, the rescue said, has no teeth left, and a cataract in the left eye. “This is the beginning of her end of lifetime,” they poignantly noted. “The least we can do is make it as comfortable as possible for her.” Credit: Port Stephens Koalas via Storyful
