New Bedford's 50 highest paid employees in 2023. Here's what they made.

NEW BEDFORD — Forty-one of New Bedford's 50 highest paid employees in 2023 were police officers, with seven firefighters and two School Dept. employees rounding out the list.

The list was compiled for the 2023 calendar year, and covers all compensation, including overtime, detail pay, base salary, and comp pay.

Unit C management positions got compensation upgrades in early 2023, but none of the 150 or so positions were paid enough in 2023 to make the top 50.

The top salary in 2022 was $225,413.60 and number 50 was $149,279.44.

Thirty-six police officers on 2022 list

The top 50 list for the 2022 calendar year included 36 police officers, 10 firefighters and four members of the school department.

Former New Bedford Personnel Director Judith Keating, commenting on the 2022 list, said police and fire employees, and to a lesser extent school employees, usually account for all the top paid employees in lists of this type.

Something to think about: Should New Bedford employees be required to live in the city?

Retroactive pay from new police contract a factor

She said road construction and other police details, as well as overtime, were factors in the compensation level of police officers.

The new police contract, approved in July 2023, was also a factor in the increase in police officers on the list in 2023, said city spokesperson Jonathan Darling.

That agreement runs from July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2024, and included retroactive pay increases.
