Bedford PD launches ‘Law Enforcement Education and Development Program’ internship for teens

BEDFORD, Va. (WFXR)—The Bedford Police Department is launching a paid internship program for teenagers with Virginia Career Works Central-Central Region.

The internship, ‘Law Enforcement Education and Development Program’ (L.E.E.A.D) is set up for teens aged 16-19 facing employment barriers and are interested in law enforcement. The internship offers up to 320 hours of hands-on experience including patrol ride-alongs, crash investigations, evidence handling, and more.

“This unique program aims to build strong, trusting relationships with our youth, helping them develop job skills and a strong sense of community,” says the Bedford Police Department’s Chief Ronnie Lewis.

Here are the requirements needed to be considered for the internship:

  • Minimum 2.0 GPA

  • Good Driving Record

  • Pass a criminal background check and Oral Review Board

  • No prior arrests

  • Good moral character

  • Interested in law enforcement and community service
