A lot has happened since Dev Ittycheria took the reins at MongoDB, the $26 billion database company he's led as president and CEO since September 2014. Ittycheria has taken MongoDB to the cloud, steered it through an IPO, overseen its transition from open source, launched a venture capital arm, and grown the customer base from a few hundred to something approaching 50,000. "When I joined the company, it wasn't clear if people would trust us to be a truly mission-critical technology," Ittycheria told TechCrunch.
Former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker concluded his testimony about a deal to kill negative stories about former President Trump during the 2016 campaign, and two more witnesses were called.
After a successful unveiling at CES, Rabbit is letting journalists try out the R1 — a small orange gadget with an AI-powered voice interface. This comes just weeks after the launch of the Humane Ai Pin, which is similarly pitched as a new kind of mobile device with AI at its center. While we’re still waiting on in-depth reviews (as opposed to an initial hands-on) of the R1, there are some pretty clear differences between the two devices.
The Federal Trade Commission voted 3-2 to ban the use of most noncompete agreements on Tuesday. This ruling means companies can't require employees who aren't senior executives to wait a set amount of time before joining a competitor or launching their own company in the same category. While the FTC's ruling will impact industries like financial services and hedge funds the most, due to the prevalence of such agreements in those industries, it could also impact startups.
As part of its Q1 2024 earning release, Snap revealed that total watch time on its TikTok competitor, Spotlight, increased more than 125% year-over-year. The company is touting the success of its short-from video feed a day after President Biden signed a bill that would ban TikTok if its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, fails to sell it within a year. Snap says overall time spent watching content globally grew year-over-year, driven primarily by increases in total time spent watching Spotlight and creator Stories.
Two hours after the World Anti-Doping Agency “invited an independent prosecutor” to probe its handling of a controversial case involving Chinese swimmers, the agency’s most vocal critic labeled the review a “whitewash” and “absolutely unacceptable.”
Space station module developer Gravitics scored a $1.7 million contract from the U.S. Space Force to develop orbital platforms to enable responsive space missions. The initiative is called tactically responsive space, or TacRS, and it's already resulted in record-breaking missions: Firefly Aerospace's Alpha rocket left the pad just 27 hours after it received its launch notice from the Space Force under its TacRS contract last year. While Gravitics was unable to provide more details as to the exact concept of operations, startup co-founder and CMO Mike DeRosa did clarify in an email that the company is not putting a module on a rocket for a tactically responsive launch.

Tesla said it would "accelerate" the launch of new models next year, including lower-cost cars, countering reports earlier this month it had scraped those plans.
Pro-Palestinian demonstrations continue to grow at a number of major U.S. universities. They have all made it clear that they are all against Israel's war with Hamas in Gaza, but what can they really do about the conflict in the Middle East from a college campus? Here's a look at what protesters are really demanding from their demonstrations.

Rattray, who studied economics at the University of Pennsylvania, has been building things for as long as he can remember, from an underground newspaper in high school to a bike-share program in college. Rattray picked up programming on the side while at UPenn, which led to a job at Stripe as an engineer on the developer platform team. At Stripe, Rattray helped to revamp API documentation and launch the system that powers Stripe's API client SDK.
The U.K.'s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is launching preliminary enquiries into whether the close-knit tie-ups and hiring practices involving Microsoft, Amazon and a trio of AI startups falls within the scope of its merger rules — and whether the arrangements could impact competition in the U.K. market. The announcement comes amid growing scrutiny of Big Tech's approach to M&A in the world of AI, where critics argue that the so-called "quasi-merger" has emerged as the flavor of the day as a means of bypassing regulatory scrutiny. Earlier this year, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) launched its own enquiries into Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft's various investments in emerging AI companies to establish whether the "partnerships pursued by dominant companies risk distorting innovation and undermining fair competition."

Tesla's been undergoing some major changes, and now we have a sense of why: The company says it is upending its product roadmap because of "pressure" on EV sales. The new and accelerated plan now includes "more affordable models" that the company claims will be launched next year. Or if Tesla CEO Elon Musk is to be believed -- and that's a big bet considering his track record with timelines -- possibly as early as the end of 2024.
