Beaver Dams shooting suspect arrested

SCHUYLER COUNTY, N.Y. (WETM) — The Catlin man who was a suspect in a reported shooting that led to a large police presence and hours-long roadblock in Beaver Dams has been arrested.

According to the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office, deputies located 40-year-old Rexford “Ely” Smith on May 8 after an investigation into a menacing incident that began in the Town of Dix. Police say that Smith was believed to be involved in a reported shooting on Mill Hill Road on the morning of May 4.

Police investigating the reported gunfire found an ongoing conflict and were led to a secondary location on State Route 414 in the Town of Catlin. The investigation at the secondary location led to a large police presence involving sheriff’s offices from three counties and the state police. State Route 414 was closed for about 10 hours during the investigation, and Smith was later named as a suspect.

Smith was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon (a class D felony), fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon (a class A misdemeanor), and second-degree menacing (a class A misdemeanor).

After his arrest, Smith was taken to the Schuyler County Jail for CAP arraignment.

The investigation into the incident that Smith is believed to have been involved in is ongoing at this time.

The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, the Watkins Glen Police Department, and the New York State Police Department assisted the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office with the investigation.
