Beaumont transient sentenced to 8 years, 9 months for carjacking “crime spree”

BEAUMONT, Texas (KETK) – A transient man identified as Jamelle Parker, 36, pleaded guilty to carjacking and was sentenced to 8 years and 9 months of federal prison on Thursday.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office Eastern District of Texas, on April 1, 2023, Parker approached a woman putting air into her tires outside of a gas station in Beaumont and demanded she give him her vehicle while “reaching in his waistband for what the woman believed to be a firearm.”

According to the court document, Parker then drove the stolen vehicle to a gas station and demanded money from the register, allegedly threatening to kill the clerk. After obtaining the money, the document reports that Parker drove the stolen vehicle to Lufkin where he crashed the vehicle into the outer wall of a convenience store, after which he entered the building and demanded money from the clerk.

The report said that Parker then fled on foot towards a nearby Whataburger, approaching a vehicle in the drive-thru and demanding the vehicle from its driver while asking “if he ‘wanted to die today.'” After the driver exited their vehicle, Parker reportedly grabbed him by the neck and pushed him away and entered the vehicle.

According to the court report, Parker began to speed away in the direction of a responding officer, the officer shot Parker in the legs inflicting nonlife-threatening wounds. Parker then crashed the vehicle and was taken into custody.
