Beasley: Injury was not self-inflicted

Contrary to earlier reports, the medical treatment that Miami Heat forward Michael Beasley received for swelling above an eye after Thursday night's preseason game against the Detroit Pistons was not the result of self-inflicted punches to the head.

Rather, the wound was caused by an accidental blow to the head from Pistons forward Jonas Jerebko while trying to block a shot in the third quarter, according to Beasley, coach Eric Spoelstra and team officials.

Beasley did acknowledge on Friday that he hit himself in the face while running down the court during the game.

"I watched the video and it does look like I knocked the mess out of myself," Beasley said before Friday's preseason game against the Charlotte Bobcats. "I had everybody in the world calling me and asking, 'Why you so crazy?'"

Beasley was playing his first game with the Heat after signing a non-guaranteed contract durng the summer. He scored nine points in the Heat's win.

Beasley was back on the floor for Friday night's game.

Drafted by the Heat in 2008, he was traded after two seasons and spent three subpar years with the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Phoenix Suns. This time around in Miami, he's hoping to stay for a while.

"I don't want to be the reason the ship falls," he said. "I'm definitely taking it more serious than my first two years."
