Bear euthanized after ransacking Simsbury home

A bear was euthanized after breaking into a house in Simsbury Friday afternoon, police said.

Police responded to the home on Old Canal Way around 12:49 p.m. after receiving a 911 call from the homeowner about a bear inside the residence. The individual was able to safely exit the house with no one else inside, according to police.

Upon arrival, officers found the bear still in the house. Police said the bear entered the house through an open window on the back deck and ransacked the house looking for food.

Officers with the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection were called in to assist Simsbury police with safely removing the bear. DEEP officers managed to safely euthanize the bear once it left the house in accordance with state guidelines as it was determined to be showing agressive behavior.

Police are calling this an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public.
