BBC releases first-look at new drama from Normal People producers
The BBC has unveiled the first look at Normal People producers' new drama series The Listeners.
A trio of pictures have been released from writer Jordan Tannahill's TV adaptation of his own novel of the same name, starring Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Iron Man 3's Rebecca Hall.
Normal People and Oscar contender Poor Things producer Element Pictures is presenting the mysterious drama about an English professor, Claire (Rebecca Hall), who begins hearing a low humming sound that nobody else around her is aware of.
This sound grows in intensity, causing trouble between Claire and her family since no medical grounds for it can be identified.
When Claire finally discovers that one of her students, Kyle (The Sparrow's Ollie West), can hear the sound too, they form an intimate friendship that changes both of their lives.
The pair discover a select few others can also hear the sound — known as The Hum — and they all join together to form an unlikely family around this possible conspiracy.
When the series was announced last month, BBC Director of Drama Lindsay Salt said: "The Listeners is a captivating story that has been brought to life in this gripping adaptation which interweaves a feeling of the unknown with the need for human connectivity. I’m thrilled to be working with Jordan, [director Janicza Bravo] and Element Pictures and can’t wait for viewers to see this remarkable drama.”
The Listeners' ensemble cast will include Prasanna Puwanarajah (The Crown), Amr Waked (Ramy), Gayle Rankin (The Greatest Showman) and Karen Henthorn (Coronation Street), among many others.
The series was one of several BBC drama announcements in February, along with a spin-off for The Split, a romantic comedy show from Aimee Lou Wood, and the renewal of Blue Lights for two additional seasons.
The Listeners has been filmed in the Greater Manchester area, and will be coming exclusively to BBC One and the BBC iPlayer later this year.
