The BBC has confirmed the release date for Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight's new series This Town.

Set to be released on Sunday, March 31 on BBC iPlayer, This Town tells the story of "an extended family fighting to choose their own paths amidst an iconic music scene" during a time of social upheaval across the country.

The six-part series features the formation of a fictional rock band amid the real-life social and political unrest of 1981 Birmingham and stars Downton Abbey's Michelle Dockery, Top Boy star Nicholas Pinnock and My Policeman's David Dawson.

In a first look trailer, which can be viewed here, we're introduced to Dante Williams (Levi Brown), an aspiring poet struggling to find his feet and avoid the erupting violence in the midlands city.

After a chance encounter with Jeannie Keefe (Eve Austin), the pair decide to form a band, which gives Dante the much needed purpose he's been searching for. "All along I've been wrong," he says in one clip. "How could I have been so thick, words need music."

The pair then recruit Dante's cousin Bardon Quinn (Ben Rose) as a singer, however it's not long before the realities of real-life catch up with the group.

Bardon is later seen being forced by his father to join the IRA, while Dante's brother Gregory (Peaky Blinders' Jordan Bolger) is "ordered" by the military to spy on his own family and Dante finds himself tempted by the world of sex and drugs.

"I want you all to know that I no longer want this band to work, I f**king need it to work," Bardon tells the group in one clip, as the trailer cuts between various images of unrest on the streets.

"Either we're gonna fly or we're going to crash and burn," Jeannie adds in another scene.
