Bayside High student-athlete dies after collapsing during conditioning

A Bayside High student-athlete died Wednesday, school officials said.

Principal Troy Walton contacted Bayside High families with news of the student’s death.

According to the statement, shared by a spokesperson with Virginia Beach City Public Schools, the student collapsed while participating in conditioning Wednesday afternoon.

“The Bayside High School staff is deeply affected by this tragic loss and we know that our students and community will be equally affected,” Walton said.

Spokesperson Jason Nichols said additional details, including the sport in which the student was participating, were not available.

In his statement to Bayside High families, Walton said the school’s administration and counselors were prepared to support staff and student needs in the wake of the student’s death.

“We know too that family is often the best source of comfort to our students during such tragic events. I know you will keep this family in your thoughts and prayers,” Walton said.
