Baylor offering free tickets, meals to families affected by Hurricane Harvey
Baylor is doing what it can to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey.
The football program announced Tuesday that it is offering free tickets for Saturday’s season opener against Liberty for families impacted by the devastating storm that has caused historic flooding in south Texas. In addition to requesting (via a form on Baylor’s website) up to eight free tickets, families will also be provided with free parking and a complimentary meal.
Additionally, Baylor will host FCS Sam Houston State’s game against Richmond on Friday night at 6 p.m. at McLane Stadium. The game was scheduled for Aug. 27 at Bowers Stadium on Sam Houston State’s campus in Huntsville, Texas, but was postponed because of flooding. Baylor said in a release it has provided its stadium rent-free. Admission is also free for all fans.
“We are honored Sam Houston State and Richmond will play in McLane Stadium,” Baylor athletic director Mack Rhoades said. “This is a small gesture to hopefully provide some relief in an incredibly difficult time, and to assist two of the nation’s premier FCS programs. We will do everything possible to provide the student-athletes, coaches and their fans a first-class experience.”
Friday’s game will mark the first time since McLane Stadium opened in 2014 that it will host a college game that does not include Baylor.
“We remain committed to serving as a resource for additional programs as they deal with the flooding from Hurricane Harvey,” Rhoades said. “We will continue to pray for those affected by the storm, along with the first responders and civilians who are selflessly working to assist those in need.”
Added Sam Houston State AD Bobby Williams: “I want to give a thanks to Baylor Director of Athletics Mack Rhoades, and everyone at Baylor for their help in making this game happen. It has taken a true team effort from a lot of different people to be able to keep one of the premier FCS games this season on the schedule.”
