BCPD: 1 dead, 1 in critical condition after shooting

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — A woman is dead and a man is in critical condition after a shooting in Battle Creek, police say.

It happened Saturday around 6 p.m. on the 200 block of Algonquin Street, according to the Battle Creek Police Department.

Police responded to a call about a person attempting to break into a home, according to BCPD. Dispatchers on the line believed they heard gunshots.

When police arrived on scene, they found a 22-year-old woman dead with apparent gunshot wounds, according to BCPD.

Police said that a 44-year-old man, also with apparent gunshot wounds, was taken to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Police believe someone was breaking into the home who knew both victims, according to BCPD. The suspect remains at large, but police do not believe there is a threat to the public.

BCPD is investigating.
