Baton Rouge sees more violent crime during Easter weekend

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – The rash of shootings in the capital city continues after a violent Easter weekend, bleeding into a new week.

Since early Sunday morning, the Baton Rouge Police Department has continued to investigate several shootings that have left at least three people dead and many others injured, including a child.

One shooting happened early Sunday on Denham Street near Plank Road. Police said two homes were hit by gunfire. A girl was lying in her bed when she was hit by a bullet. Luckily, the child’s injuries are non-life-threatening.

Hours later on Cate Avenue, police said 35-year-old Edward Brooks was found with gunshot wounds. He was taken to a local hospital but later died.

Just minutes into a new day on April 1, another homicide took place in the city. Police said 26-year-old Timotheus Bowie Jr. was shot and taken to a local hospital but later died.

Not two hours later, another shooting in the 2800 block of 68th Avenue claimed the lives of two people. The East Baton Rouge Coroner’s Office identified one of the victims as 21-year-old Jonathan Williams. Police said a second victim died at the hospital.

Another shooting Monday morning left two others injured. Luckily police said the injuries to both were non-fatal.

“To those of you out there resolving your disputes with violence, I speak with members of the community every day,” said Chief Thomas Morse Jr. in a press conference. “They want you off the streets. I want you off the streets. And we will all be working together to get you off the streets.”
