Baton Rouge man sentenced to 30 years in prison after beating death of baby son

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A Baton Rouge man was sentenced Thursday, April 18, in the beating death of his three-month-old son that happened in the summer of 2021.

Leon Arnold, 38, of Baton Rouge, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in 19th Judicial District Court. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison, according to court documents.

Arnold was arrested on Aug. 19, 2021, and charged with first-degree murder regarding the beating death of his son. An East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury indicted him on a second-degree murder charge on Dec. 16, 2021.

According to court documents, the court vacated the previous jury trial date of Monday, April 22, with his plea. Any Motion to Reconsider Sentence must be filed within 30 days.

Arnold was previously charged with second-degree cruelty to juveniles in 2010 after his daughter suffered a fractured leg and skull, internal bleeding, severe head trauma and neurological impairment, according to arrest documents.
