Baton Rouge General partners with Entergy to build new generators for both hospitals

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Entergy has partnered with Baton Rouge General at Bluebonnet and Mid City to build natural gas generators on the campus of both hospitals.

Baton Rouge General is the first company to partner with Entergy through their “Power Through” program, which provides companies and businesses like hospitals and health care centers the proper generators to stay in operation if in case the power in the city goes out.

“Those generators are going to provide power to the hospital, full backup power in times of need,” said Michelle Bourg, vice president of Customer Service for Entergy Louisiana.

The program funded over $6 million for the hospitals to build over 21 generators. Sen. Franklin Foil was on board for funding the remaining amount. They were given $9 million from the governor, estimating the total cost of the project around $15 million.

Foil says that this new project will be a great purpose for the hospitals in continuing their services to the community.

“Baton Rouge General came to me and made this request. They were in my district, but they serve the whole community,” said Foil.

The project was discussed for three years and their main purpose in offering these new generators will be a helping hand in times of crisis.

When natural disasters occur such as hurricanes, the care for patients from the staff plays a critical role. The generators will allow power to be sent throughout the entire campus instead of certain parts. They will also serve as a backup power source for surrounding areas.

“The hospital will always come first but if the grid needs that power, we can call on the generator and that generation can help support the communities and cities that we serve all across the state,” said Bourg.

Baton Rouge General is grateful for the opportunity to serve the community and the partnership with Entergy and will continue to do everything they can to allow full service and access to their hospitals no matter the situation.

“We won’t blink an eye it’ll be, it’ll always on, even when the rest of the city may be without power, we will have power to be able to take care of patients,” said Edgardo Tenreiro, CEO of Baton Rouge General.

The construction for both hospitals is set to be completed in 2025.
