The superhero showdown fans have been clamoring for officially has a title!
The follow up to "Man of Steel" is called "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," Warner Bros. Pictures announced on Wednesday.
The studio announced that filming has commenced on the project, with Henry Cavill in the role of Clark Kent/Superman, Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White and Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth and Holly Hunter in a newly created role.
Filming will take place on location at Michigan Motion Picture Studios and on location in and around Detroit, Michigan; Illinois; Africa; and the South Pacific - do we smell an Aquaman cameo!?
Here are AccessHollywood.com's snap judgments about the news:
- Batman gets top billing in the title, sorry Kal-El!
- "Dawn of Justice" is an overt nod (and studio hope) for a possible Justice League movie... think DC Comics' version of "The Avengers." Other members of the Justice League include Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, Cyborg, Green Lantern, Green Arrow and Martian Manhunter.
- We don't expect the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel to be buddies anytime soon, despite the hint that they will (hopefully) form the Justice League. It's "Batman V Superman," not "Batman Bros Out With Superman." Expect plenty of carnage, bat gadgets assaulting Superman and Batman attempting to survive Superman's eye lasers.
- Warner Bros. is also not backing down from the weekend of May 6, 2016, the same weekend that the third "Captain America" is slated to open. It appears Warner and Marvel will continue their game of box office chicken for the time being!
