Sept 13 (The Sports Xchange) - Former Milwaukee Braves first baseman Frank Torre has died, it was announced Saturday. He was 82. Torre is the older brother of Hall of Fame manager Joe Torre. Frank Torre played with the Braves from 1956-60, including the club that beat the New York Yankees in the 1957 World Series. After spending the 1961 season with the Vancouver Mounties of the Pacific Coast League, he returned to the majors for two more seasons. He spent 1962-63 with the Philadelphia Phillies. Known for his strong defensive play, Torre batted .273 with 13 home runs and 179 RBIs in 714 major league games. "I am deeply saddened by the loss of Frank Torre, a close friend for nearly 60 years and a man who marked the start of a great baseball family," Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement. - - - Colorado Rockies first baseman Justin Morneau is considered day-to-day with intercostal soreness on his left side. Morneau is in pursuit of the National League batting title with about two weeks left in the regular season.
