Baseball-Highlights of Saturday's MLB games

May 10 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Saturday's Major League Baseball games. - - - Dodgers 6, Giants 2 Second baseman Drew Gordon drove in the tie-breaking run and stole three bases, sparking the Los Angeles Dodgers to victory over the San Francisco Giants. Center fielder Matt Kemp added a solo home run as the Dodgers (20-18) beat the National League West-leading Giants (23-14) for only the second time in the last nine meetings at home, in addition to ending a three-game losing streak. Gordon slapped an RBI double to left off reliever Jeremy Affeldt to score catcher Drew Butera and give the Dodgers the lead with two out in the seventh inning. - - - Tigers 9, Twins 3 Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez blasted three-run homers, powering the Detroit Tigers to a big win over the Minnesota Twins. Cabrera capped a six-run, second-inning outburst with his fifth homer of the season, while designated hitter Martinez homered for the fourth time in six games during the seventh inning. Tigers starter Max Scherzer (5-1) had his streak of 16 straight shutout innings end in the third on Brian Dozier's three-run homer but still notched the victory. - - - Brewers 5, Yankees 4 CC Sabathia had another rough pitching night as the Milwaukee Brewers edged the New York Yankees. Sabathia, back in Milwaukee where he led the Brewers to their first postseason berth in 26 years after a July 2007 trade, gave up four runs - just one earned though - on eight hits (three homers) in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked one. - - - Diamondbacks 4, White Sox 3 Wade Miley pitched seven strong innings and overcame a milestone home run from Paul Konerko as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Chicago White Sox. The 435th home run of Konerko's career, a two-run shot to left field, was the only blemish against Miley (3-3), who gave up four hits and struck out six in seven innings. Konerko's first homer of the season moved the slugger past Juan Gonzalez and Andruw Jones into 43rd on the all-time list. - - - Braves 2, Cubs 0 Hard-luck Chicago Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija is still winless after his team lost to the Atlanta Braves. Samardzija allowed just two hits in six innings and had seven strikeouts to one walk, but the right-hander has yet to earn a win in eight starts this season despite a 1.45 ERA. - - - Red Sox 8, Rangers 3 A night after taking 126 pitches to break up Yu Darvish's no-hit bid, Boston had more success at the plate as the Red Sox beat the Texas Rangers. It took the Red Sox only five pitches to hit Texas left-hander Martin Perez, who struggled early and lost his third consecutive outing. He made it only 3 2/3 innings, giving up nine hits and six earned runs. - - - Mariners 3, Royals 1 Towering Seattle pitcher Chris Young earned his third consecutive win as the Mariners beat the Kansas City Royals. The 6-foot-10-inch (208 cm) Young allowed just one run off three hits without issuing a walk over eight innings of work. He did not allow a runner past first base after the third inning. - - - Athletics 4, Nationals 3 (10 innings) Catcher John Jaso hit a solo home run in the third inning then launched a walk-off double with two outs in the bottom of 10th inning, driving in Alberto Callaspo from first base and lifting the Oakland Athletics to a comeback victory over the Washington Nationals. Trailing 3-1 entering the bottom of the ninth, the A's rallied to score twice off Nationals closer Rafael Soriano, who had pitched a career high 25 consecutive scoreless innings and converted 19 straight save opportunities dating back to August 20. - - - Padres 9, Marlins 3 Chase Headley returned from the disabled list with a three-run, sixth-inning homer and left fielder Seth Smith drove in four runs, but was a single short of the first cycle in Padres history, as San Diego eased to victory over the Miami Marlins. Smith continued his torrid hitting for the Padres, going 3-for-4 with a homer, a triple, a double and four RBIs. In his last 25 at-bats, the left fielder has six doubles, three triples and a homer with six RBIs. He became the 10th hitter in Padres history to fall a single short of the cycle. - - - Orioles 5, Astros 4 (10 innings) The Baltimore Orioles tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning before beating the struggling Houston Astros. Steve Clevenger's one-out double in the 10th inning scored J.J. Hardy for the winning run as the Orioles won their fifth straight. - - - Phillies 5, Mets 4 First baseman Ryan Howard's fourth hit of the night, an RBI single with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, broke a tie and lifted the Philadelphia Phillies to a road win over the New York Mets, who have lost five in a row. - - - Angels 5, Blue Jays 3 Left-hander Tyler Skaggs pitched into the ninth inning and first baseman C.J. Cron hit his first major-league home run as the Los Angeles Angels held on to defeat the Toronto Blue Jays on the road. - - - Rays 7, Indians 1 Left-hander Erik Bedard gave up just one hit in six innings as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Cleveland Indians and halted a four-game losing streak. - - - Rockies 11, Reds 2 The Colorado Rockies hit five home runs, including two by Corey Dickerson, while Jordan Lyles pitched six solid innings in a dominant road win over the Cincinnati Reds. - - - Pirates 4, Cardinals 3 Pedro Alvarez had the go-ahead RBI single in the fourth inning as the Pittsburgh Pirates recovered from a three-run deficit to beat the St. Louis Cardinals for their season-best fourth consecutive victory.
