Alan Abelson, Barron's editor and columnist, dies at age 87
NEW YORK (AP) -- Alan Abelson, an editor and columnist for the business publication Barron's for 57 years, died Thursday at the age of 87.
The cause of death was a heart attack, according to a spokeswoman for Dow Jones, publisher of Barron's.
Abelson was on a medical leave of absence for the past three months, according to the Wall Street Journal. He had been writing his Up and Down Wall Street column until he left.
"Financial journalism lost one of its leading lights today with Alan Abelson's passing," Barron's editor and president said Ed Finn said in a statement. "For many readers, there can be no substitute for Alan's witty, wise and wonderfully written comments each week in Up and Down Wall Street. He touched so many lives and our thoughts and prayers are with his family."
Abelson graduated with degrees in chemistry and English from the City College of New York. He received a master's degree from the Writer's Workshop at the University of Iowa. He started at Barron's in 1956, according to the Journal, and became managing editor of the publication nine years later.
