‘Barrels of Love’ collection day helps restock food pantries

DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — The Barrels of Love Non-Perishable Food Drive is helping restock food pantries in Morgan County. Donations were made by the car load at Beltline Church of Christ Friday morning.

Organizers with the food drive have been collecting donations since Valentine’s Day. Those same food items will be used to feed children and families in need.

Woman who broke barriers now empowering the next generation

Food pantries have a tendency to “dry out” after the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, explained food drive chairman Joe Holmes.

Ashley Boyd with The Committee on Church Cooperation agrees.

“The end of the year is always so very generous to food pantries and then it really slows down during the spring and summer months,” she said. “This was one effort to help replenish them.”

Items collected help restock food pantries at Salvation Army of Decatur, The Committee on Church Cooperation, and Backpack Feeding Programs for Decatur City and Morgan County Schools.

Boyd says drives like this can help restock food pantries for up to four months.

Paving the Way: One Generation at a Time

Jeanne Wheat with Decatur City Schools said these donations will help over 1,000 students get food during school holidays.

“What the food drive does for us is it provides some supplemental food our students who may be food insecure for the week of spring break,” Wheat said.

Barrels of Love has managed to raise over one-million items in the last 11 years for different agencies around Decatur. You can continue adding to that number by visiting their website here.
