Barcelona and the world of football condemn deadly La Rambla attack

Barcelona have extended their condolences to those killed in the Catalan city after a van ploughed through crowds on La Rambla on Thursday.

The thoroughfare is one of Barcelona's most famous landmarks, and is a hotspot for tourists from across the world.

But La Rambla was marked by tragedy when an unidentified individual crashed his vehicle into pedestrians, before fleeing the scene.

Police have confirmed fatal casualties at the site, although there is as of yet no final count for those killed or hurt.

The Blaugrana subsequently condemned the deadly attack on Twitter, pledging solidarity with those affected.

"Our hearts ache due to the attack on our city. All of our strength and esteem for the victims, their families and the citizens of Barcelona," the statement read on social media.

Fellow Barcelona side Espanyol also registered their disbelief at events, writing "The most beautiful city in the world, we suffer for you and all Barcelona residents."

The two local teams were followed by a host of teams and players from across the world in registering their condolences, as the scale of the attack became evident.
