Barbie has a new job at Port Huron Museums for the summer with her new upcoming exhibit.

And soon you can come experience the history, influence and legacy of Barbie at Port Huron Museums. Officially opening on April 6, the Carnegie Center's two main gallery spaces will be the doll's new home through October. Port Huron Museums Curator of Collections and Exhibits Kayla Wendt said Barbie is loved by many people and the museum is excited to bring her in.

"Barbie is all the rage right now, and she appeals to a large audience," she said. "We thought this would be something fun for a variety of people."

The exhibit will be broken up into the themes of Barbie, including her legacy in the media, history and her expansive career catalog. There will be more than 100 dolls featured in the exhibit from every era of Barbie, as well as accessories and other Barbie branded items.

The Carnegie Center will have an opening party for the exhibit at 6 p.m. on April 5. People are encouraged to wear pink or their favorite Barbie-inspired outfits. There will be pink-themed drinks as well.

Tickets for the opening cost $35 for general admission and $25 for museum members. Tickets are available on the Port Huron Museum's event page at www.phmuseum.org.

"We are confident in this exhibit," said Port Huron Museums Communications Manager Andrew Kercher. "People are going to want to see it. There's been a lot of buzz for it and we as a staff are excited."

Kercher said the exhibit is being made entirely in-house by the museum, so it will be a never-before-seen exhibit. Many of the exhibit pieces are being gathered from private, local Barbie collectors.

Throughout the duration of the exhibit, the Carnegie Center will be putting on Barbie-related programs, including a career day featuring women within the Port Huron community, slumber parties and a make a weird Barbie event. The dates for these programs are yet to be announced.

Admission to the museum is free through July.

Port Huron Museums has been dropping hints about the Barbie exhibit on their Facebook since February. First, they posted a picture of the Thomas Edison statue colored pink. Following that photo, they also posted pink versions of the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse and the Carnegie Center.
