Barbra Streisand's Regrettable 'Temple of Doom' Cameo

Barbra Streisand's Regrettable 'Temple of Doom' Cameo

We realize here's only so much time one can spend in a day watching new trailers, viral video clips, and shaky cell phone footage of people arguing on live television. This is why The Atlantic Wire is unveiling a new late afternoon feature highlighting the day's video clips that truly earn your five minutes (or less) of attention. Today: The new Wilco video arrives with added context, Tom Wolfe (almost) rides a zipline, and Barbara Streisand stars in a truly bizarre Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom outtake.

  • Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy tells The Atlantic that the lyrics for the band's new single "Born Alone" came from reassembling the words to Emily Dickinson poems. The song's music video looks like it was assembled from old tour photo albums. And it works.  [The Atlantic]

  • On the one hand, a sketch where famous authors read from their books while ziplining across a gorge is the kind of brainy conceptual idea that only Conan O'Brien could devise. But why not rope in actual authors for the stunt? The soundalikes for Tom Wolfe, Joyce Carol Oates, and Maya Angelou did well enough last night, but it's no substitute for the realism that comes from knowing that's Gay Talese or Richard Russo up there.[TBS]

  • You don't have to be a regular Jimmy Kimmel Live viewer to appreciate the tribute he delivered last night in memory his uncle Frank Potenza, who appeared regularly in the role of "Uncle Frank" the security guard before passing away death last month at the age of 77. • Even with the volume turned way down, it's difficult to make out most what Barbra Streisand, Carrie Fisher, and Empire Strikes Back director Irvin Kershner said to Harrison Ford when they visited him on the set of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and pretended to whip him, as a joke. According to the transcript movie blog JoBlo posted, Streisand yells, among other things: "This is for Hanover Street!" (a reference to Ford's the long-forgotten 1979 romantic dud), "This is for all the money you’re going to make on Return of the Jedi!" and, most clearly and most regrettably, "I feel like a f-----."  [Vulture via StooTV]
