Barack and Michelle Obama Buy an $11.75 Million Home on Martha’s Vineyard
The former first family has a new home on Martha's Vineyard. Former president Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, have reportedly purchased a home on the Massachusetts island for $11.75 million. Speculative news of the sale first surfaced in September, but now, the Vineyard Gazette reports that records show the house has been sold, and that the buyer is a trust associated with the Obamas. The seller of the home is Wyc Grousbeck, the owner of the Boston Celtics basketball team.
Their new beach house is a seven-bedroom, eight-and-a-half bathroom, 6,892-square-foot mansion set on almost 30 acres on the Edgartown Great Pond. The property also includes a detached garage, a barn, and a pool. The exterior of the house is covered in weathered shingles, while the interior is somewhat traditional in style, with an all-white kitchen, vaulted ceilings, and a stone fireplace. The dining room is circular, with windows all around looking out at the meticulously landscaped property.
Before purchasing the place, the Obamas actually rented this home for the summer and apparently loved it enough to make it permanent. Barack, Michelle, and their daughters Malia (who is currently a student at Harvard) and Sasha, have long spent their summer vacations on the island. During the summer of 2016, Sasha made headlines when she got a job at a seafood restaurant in Oak Bluffs, bringing a secret service detail to work with her.
When the Dreams From My Father author left the White House in 2017, he and Michelle stayed in Washington, D.C. They purchased a nine-bedroom, eight-and-a-half bathroom brick home there for $8.1 million in May of that year. It is unclear if they now plan to sell that home and make Martha's Vineyard their permanent place of residence.
