Bangladesh building collapse kills 3, traps others

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — An 8-story commercial building near Bangladesh's capital collapsed Wednesday, killing three people and possibly trapping many more, a fire official said.

The building housed shops, a bank and a garment factory on its upper floors, fire official Md Jibon Mia said. He said it appeared the floors of the garment factory crumbled onto those below, and the building was now the height of a 3-story building.

He said three bodies have been recovered and many others are feared to have been trapped.

"We don't know how many were inside the building, but it would be many," he said.

In November, a fire at a garment factory killed 112 people and raised an outcry about safety in the nation's garment industry, which exports clothes to leading Western retailers. Bangladesh has about 4,000 garment factories.
