Maryland Gov. Wes Moore is dismissing Republican claims that diversity, equity and inclusion are to blame for the Francis Scott Key Bridge collision in Baltimore. The tragedy left two construction workers dead, with four others still missing.

“My response is I have no time for foolishness,” Moore said to CNN host Dana Bash when asked about the hateful commentary on “State of the Union.” Sadly, it remains unknown to when the four people missing will be discovered due to the complexity of the situation.

Last week, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott spoke out against those who called him the “DEI mayor” after the bridge accident. Certain conservative social media users—including Utah Rep. Phil Lyman and Florida congressional candidate Anthony Sabatini—found a way to blame diversity, equity and inclusion for the catastrophe.

Scott sat down with MSNBC’s Joy Reid to discuss the online attacks. “I know, and we know, and you know very well that Black men—and young Black men in particular—have been the bogeyman for those who are racist and think that only straight, wealthy white men should have a say in anything,” he stated.

Scott also explained that he didn’t receive a special appointment to his position because of his race—he was literally elected to office. In fact, the 39-year-old politician served on the city council before becoming mayor in 2020. Scott won more than 70 percent of the vote.

“We’ve been the bogeyman for [racists] since the first day they brought us to this country, and what they mean by DEI in my opinion is duly elected incumbent,” he said. “We know what they want to say, but they don’t have the courage to say the N-word, and the fact that I don’t believe in their untruthful and wrong ideology,” Scott continued.

Unlike Scott, Moore spent less time on the incendiary commentary and more time concentrating on the families impacted by the tragedy. “I’m locked in on making sure that we can bring closure and comfort to these families and making sure that we’re going to keep our first responders safe or doing heroic work,” he said.

“On making sure that we’re going to open up this channel and be able to get boats and ships and get our economic engine going again, making sure that we’re taking care of our people to include our first responders and families and small businesses who have been impacted by this—and I’m making sure that we’re going to get the Key Bridge rebuilt.”
