Baltimore Key Bridge collapses after being struck by container ship

BALTIMORE, Md. (DC News Now) — The Baltimore City Fire Department said that early in the morning, they received reports that parts of the Francis Scott Key Bridge had collapsed.

Just after 1:00 a.m., crews arrived at the scene and reported a complete collapse of the key bridge.

First responders were also given information that there were multiple people on the bridge at the time of the collapse.

Crews said they were able to remove two people from the water. One person refused to be transported to the hospital while another person was transported to the trauma center in serious condition.

James Wallace, the Fire Chief for the Baltimore City Fire Department said they are in an active search rescue.

First responders said there 6 people potentially on the water. They might be construction workers.

About 35,000 people use key bridge everyday.

“This is an unthinkable tragedy. We have to, first and foremost pray for all of those who are impacted, those families, pray for our first responders and thank them. All of them working together, city, state, local, to make sure that we are working through this tragedy,” said Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott.

Governor Moore posted on X that he has declared a State of Emergency and is working to deploy federal resources from the government.

“We are thankful for the brave men and women who are carrying out efforts to rescue those involved and pray for everyone’s safety,” Governor Moore added in a post to X.

The Maryland State Highway Administration said in a post to X that I-695 is closed at MD157 (Exit 43) and I-695 at Route 2 after the bridge collapse.

FBI says there is no evidence of terrorism at this time.
