Balenciaga mocked online for selling £6,000 seven-layer coat

From £600 wedged clogs to an IKEA-inspired tote weighing in at £1,700, Balenciaga is no stranger to successfully trolling its customers. But the French fashion house isn’t done just yet, as one of its AW18 coats is stealing the conversation over on social media.

Balenciaga is selling a seven-layer parka for an eye-watering £6,095 and according to its description, the marmite fashion item involves a “combination of plaid shirts, jersey hoodies and technical fleeces”. That’s one way to weatherproof your look, huh?

But it wasn’t long until social media users drew comparisons between the coat and the now-famous ‘Friends’ episode where Joey Tribbiani dons all of roommate Chandler Bing’s clothes.

One Twitter user joked: “They were Chandler’s clothes so technically it’s a Tribbiani-Bing collab!”

While another questioned, “I wonder if you’d only get one garment charge at the cleaners?”

But not everyone was willing to see the humorous side, as one user demanded that the creative director, Demna Gvasalia, be fired.

The coat first debuted on the catwalk during Paris Fashion Week as part of the label’s AW18 line. But it’s not merely for men, as Balenciaga also introduced the fash pack to a range of multi-layered coats for women too.

Models just about managed to walk out clad in layer after layer of slogan-emblazoned hoodies, shaggy fur coats and ski-ready jackets. But the designer’s latest drop may prove a sartorial step too far for some.

Will you be braving the winter weather in the divisive look?
