TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — America’s national bird is flying once again after it was struck by a vehicle earlier this month.

A bald eagle was rescued after colliding with a car on Route 4 in Calvert County in Maryland on March 9, the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office said. When the driver stopped the car, they discovered the bird survived the impact but was lodged into the vehicle’s front grille.

The sheriff’s office shared photos of the eagle stuck to the car with one of its wings spanning across the front of the vehicle.

Calvert County Animal Control and the sheriff’s office said they rushed “into action to save a bald eagle!”

After the eagle was safely removed, it was examined and found to be “in good health” and was released back into the wild.

Another photo shows an animal control officer holding the eagle as it appears to crack a smile.

“Thanks to ACO [Animal Control Officer] Neel and all who helped rescue this wonderful creature!” the sheriff’s office wrote on Facebook.
