While the bald eagle was removed from the list of federally endangered and threatened species in 2007, the nation’s bird is still protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, making it illegal to hunt, possess, sell, or even offer to sell, hunt, or possess bald eagles.

Bald eagles were chosen as a national emblem of the United States in 1782.
