A Port Huron resident has achieved her dream of opening her own business and will be serving up baked good for those with a sweet tooth.

Melinda Sanchez has wanted to open her own bakery for the past 13 years after doing custom cake orders for people around the community. Her bakery, M'z Sweets, will sell cookies, pastries, brownies, custom cake orders and a variety of other baked goods. Additionally, most of the baked goods will have gluten free options.

"We're near downtown, but not directly downtown and it's a neighborhood where not much is offered for the kids that are around," she said. "I want them to be able to come in during the morning and grab breakfast before school and things like that."

M'z Sweets is located at 901 Erie St. inside the previous Treat'z Frozen Yogurt building. It's grand opening is Monday from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Sanchez said she plans to have M'z Sweets be open from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day except Sundays.

M'z Sweets will be keeping some aspects of the old Treat'z menu such as mac and cheese, pretzels and bagels. The bakery will also keep four of Treat'z frozen yogurt machines.

"I want to have the food limited because its more focused on the baked goods, but I still want people to have food options," Sanchez said.

Nina Kinney was the owner of Treat'z. She said in an email that she is very excited for Sanchez to open her business and believes she will do amazing.

"She's keeping things pretty similar to what we were doing but adding more custom ordered baked goods and cakes," Kinney said. "We are just excited to see what we started continuing."

M'z Sweets will be operated by Sanchez, her daughters Morgan Gates and Madison Sanchez and her niece Olivia O'Conner, as well as getting help from close friends. Sanchez said she wants to keep the bakery a family business.

"I want something for my kids to have in the future if they choose to have it," Sanchez said.

Gates will be assisting in cookie decorating and running the registers. She said she is looking forward to her family seeing the bakery and what her mom has accomplished.

"She's wanted this for so long," Gates said. "I'm looking forward to the family coming in and seeing how well she's done."
