Bakery inspired by hip hop, graffiti culture opens in Fresno with giant cookies
Thickest. Fattest. “Doughpest” (as in dopest).
That’s how new bakery Cookie Plug at The Square at Campus Pointe near Fresno State describes its cookies.
The business serving unusually large cookies opened Thursday and will celebrate its grand opening this weekend with a block party at the shopping center near Shaw and Chestnut avenues.
Clearly, this isn’t your average cookie bakery.
For starters, its cookies are huge, both wide and thick. They’re four inches across and 1.5 inches tall.
Cookie Plug describes them as part cookie, part cake and part brownie.
Cookies come in 18 flavors, such as creatively named “the O.G. cookie” (chocolate chip) and a “Snooperdoodle” (snickerdoodle) cookie.
There are also keto versions of several cookies.
Cookie Plug was inspired by hip hop and graffiti culture. That’s why a mural on the wall features a boombox, a bulldog, Biggie Smalls and the words “Nickle Nickle Nine” (a reference to the 559 area code) in graffiti-style font on the wall.
As for the name, Cookie Plug, The Bee reached out to the location, but couldn’t get a clear answer about why it was named that. Plug, in slang, can mean a supplier, often of marijuana, but also of discount tickets, for example. Plug 1 was also the stage name of rapper Kelvin Mercer, a member of the hip hop trio De La Soul. It can also mean to promote something.
Cookie Plug is franchised with about 30 locations in the United States and Puerto Rico. The Fresno franchise is owned by Kevin Jordan.
Grand opening
The bakery opened Thursday, but will celebrate its grand opening this weekend. There will be a DJ, vendors, a car show, youth hip hop performances, and appearances by current and former Fresno State football players.
Discounts will be available too. Customers can buy 12 cookies for the price of four with a drink.
Details: Cookie Plug is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays, and from 11 a.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays.
