Bakersfield sees 30% increase in bike crashes: Law firm study

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — May is National Bike Month and Bakersfield law firm Chain Cohn Clark released a study that found the city has some of the highest rates of accidents involving bicycles in the nation and those numbers are on the rise.

Bakersfield saw 70 crashes involving bicycles in 2023, which resulted in 71 injuries and two deaths, according to the study.

The new data shows a 30% increase from two years ago.

In total, over the last 10 years, the firm said Bakersfield has recorded 723 bike crashes with 712 injuries and 24 fatalities.

“It is crucial for cyclists and motorists to prioritize safety measures and follow these traffic laws: wear a properly fitted helmet to reduce the risk of head and brain injuries, adhere to rules such as riding with traffic, and use hand signals,” attorney Matt Clark said in a release.
