Bakersfield City Council to consider purchase of portable street barriers 5 months after Christmas Parade crash

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Five months since a truck plowed into a crowd at the Bakersfield Christmas Parade, Bakersfield City Council are eyeing to buy portable street barriers to prevent that from happening again.

City officials will hear a proposal at Wednesday’s meeting to buy 24 portable street barriers for $390,000.

In the past, the city has parked large dump trucks across streets to prevent drivers from going near crowds. City staff says the previous method is impractical and costly.

According to city staff, the portable barriers are “cutting edge” and a better way to protect the public.
