BAFTA Nominations: ‘La La Land’ Leads With 11; ‘Arrival,’ ‘Nocturnal Animals’ Nab 9 Each – Full List & Notable Omissions
UPDATE, WRITETHRU: A trio of films that debuted at the Venice Film Festival leads the pack of nominees for the 70th BAFTA Film Awards which were announced in London this morning. The British Academy swooned for the Damien Chazelle-directed La La Land which opened the Lido festival and has been twirling through awards season ever since — on Sunday it took a record seven Golden Globe wins. It has 11 BAFTA mentions, including Best Film, Best Director, Leading Actor and Leading Actress. Lionsgate’s contemporary ode to old Hollywood played the London Film Festival in October, but doesn’t open in the UK until Friday — today’s nods should be a boon to the distrib’s box office this weekend. Lionsgate scored a record 18 nominations across four titles. (See full list of nominees below.)
Denis Villeneuve’s lyrical sci-fi title Arrival follows La La with nine noms, also including Best Picture, Director and Actress for Amy Adams. The highly-praised pic has been in the awards conversation since descending on Venice and has also had a super solid run, crossing $150M worldwide in early January.
Arrival was the subject of a splashy Cannes deal in 2014 when Paramount plunked down $20M for U.S. and Canada rights. EOne is releasing in the UK. Similarly, Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals, which also turned up in nine BAFTA races (and also stars Adams), was picked up by Focus in another $20M Cannes deal the following year. Nocturnal won the Grand Jury Prize in Venice and on Sunday, Aaron Taylor-Johnson surprised with a Globe win for Supporting Actor. He’s nominated today along with Leading Actor Jake Gyllenhaal and Ford in Director and Adapted Screenplay, among others. Colin Firth won the Leading Actor BAFTA for Ford’s 2009 debut, A Single Man.
Nocturnal is not in the Best Picture race, however. Rounding out that category are Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester By The Sea; Ken Loach’s Cannes Palme d’Or winner I, Daniel Blake; and Barry Jenkins’ Globe winner Moonlight, all independent films. Manchester has six overall nominations; Moonlight has four.
Loach’s I, Daniel Blake — also nominated in the Outstanding British Film category — has five nods. It has been 50 years since Loach’s first BAFTA nomination in 1967. Also with five are Warner Bros’ return to the Wizarding World, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them; The Weinstein Co’s Lion and Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge.
Gibson, however, is conspicuously absent from the directing category with his major and lauded return behind the camera. Also notably absent is Martin Scorsese’s long-gestating passion project Silence, which was shut out. Denzel Washington’s Fences scored just one mention, for presumed Oscar-frontrunner Viola Davis. But double Oscar-winner Washington, who has never been nominated for a BAFTA — although he won an Excellence in Film prize from BAFTA LA’s Britannia Awards — is a no-show here. (One note re Isabelle Huppert not being in the Leading Actress category: Elle was not eligible this year for BAFTA, which also explains why it is not amongst the Foreign Language nominees.)
Manchester By The Sea, which is released by Amazon/Roadside in the U.S. and Studiocanal in the UK, sees Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams earn nods for Leading Actor and Supporting Actress respectively while Lonergan is nominated for both Director and Original Screenplay. The film has grossed $33.8M in the U.S. since its November 18 release and is set for a January 13 release in the UK.
In addition to Best Film and Outstanding British Film, Loach’s I, Daniel Blake has nods for Best Director, Original Screenplay and Supporting Actress for Hayley Squires. EOne releases Daniel Blake in the UK, which centers on an elderly carpenter faced with challenging Britain’s broken bureaucracy, and the film has been a hit on its home turf and in France, where it has taken $3.8M and $6.4M respectively.
Hell Or High Water, released in the UK by Studiocanal, received three nominations including Supporting Actor for Jeff Bridges, Original Screenplay and Cinematography.
The highest-grossing film in Britain in 2016, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which was made in the UK, has two mentions.
Some other films which got love this morning include Captain Fantastic, which earned a Leading Actor nomination for Viggo Mortensen; Pathé’s Florence Foster Jenkins, which earned Donald Trump fave Meryl Streep a nod for Leading Actress (her 15th nomination) as well as Hugh Grant for Supporting Actor and a Make Up and Hair nom; and The Girl On The Train, which earned a Leading Actress nomination for its star Emily Blunt.
BAFTA Chief Exec Amanda Berry this morning told Deadline she is “thrilled by the nominations. Mainly because there is such a wide range of nominated films and a diverse range of subject matter… which signals a strong year.”
In the acting races are previous nominees for the EE BAFTA Rising Star Award including Andrew Garfield, Blunt and Taylor-Johnson. “These are people we recognized earlier in their careers, so to see them nominated now is terrific,” says Berry.
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts made some rule tweaks over the summer, including expanding the Animated Film category. It has traditionally been limited to three films, but the option is now there to increase that to five if the level of entries is sufficient. This year, four films made the cut: Finding Dory, Kubo And The Two Strings, Moana and Zootopia (or Zootropolis as it’s known in the UK).
The BAFTAs take place on February 12 at the Royal Albert Hall in London and will be hosted by Stephen Fry.
