Nolan leads JU past Southern Miss

Kevion Nolan has wasted no time making an impact for the Jacksonville University Dolphins since returning to the lineup after a knee injury.

The junior guard led JU with 23 points on Tuesday and made contributions across the board as the Dolphins smacked Southern Mississippi 62-51 at the Reed Green Coliseum in Hattiesburg, Miss.

JU (6-3) has won four of its last five games and held its seventh opponent in nine games under 60 points. The Dolphins are fifth in the nation in scoring defense at 54.7 points allowed per game.

The Dolphins' three losses have been at UCF, Georgia and Minnesota, all by margins of 11 points or less.

Nolan made seven of 14 shots from the floor and hit on 5 of 8 from beyond the 3-point arc. He also had five rebounds, five steals and six assists and only two turnovers.

In his first two games back from the injury he sustained early in the opening game of the season, Nolan has scored 40 points, made 13 of 25 shots from the floor (9 of 15 on 3-point attempts), with seven rebounds, nine steals and nine assists.

The Eagles (4-6) had an early 7-0 lead but Nolan and Tyreese Davis hit 3-pointers to get the Dolphins started. After Southern Miss led 18-17 with 7:57 left in the first half, JU went on an 11-2 run, with Nolan making a 3-pointer, a layup and assisting on baskets by Tommy Bruner and Osayi Osifo.

JU never led by less than seven points in the second half. The Dolphins had only eight turnovers to 19 for the Eagles, and outscored Southern Miss 24-9 off turnovers.

The Dolphins return home on Saturday at play Webber International at 4 p.m.

EWC gets two double-doubles

Senior guard La'Quanza Glover and junior center Emari Bell posted double-doubles as the Edward Waters women's team beat Columbia International (S.C.) 81-57 on Monday at James Weldon Johnson Gym.

Glover had 18 points and a season-high 21 rebounds and Bell had 15 points and 12 rebounds. Glover added six assists.

Senior guard Teiyahna Hutchinson had 15 points, five rebounds and four steals. The Tigers (10-4) held Columbia (4-7) to .268 shooting.
