Right before the season 13 premiere of The Bachelorette, leading lady Rachel Lindsay broke from tradition and revealed that she had, in fact, met the man of her dreams and was engaged. In the interim, Lindsay and her mystery winner–like their predecessors–were instructed to conceal the engagement from the public while the season unfolds on ABC. And at home.

“I try to anticipate every single situation, but there are some things you just can’t prepare yourself for,” Lindsay told People this week. “He watches every [episode], and then we talk about it, and we move on. But that’s us.”

The issue is that their romance, in addition to her relationship with dozens of others suitors, are playing out on national television. “He’s got to answer to family and friends, and so do I,” she continued. “And that’s the kind of stuff we didn’t prepare for… That’s what makes it a little harder.”

“At times, I feel like I don’t even deserve this because I’m getting everything that I want,” Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay told The Knot and other reporters in a May 2017 call. (ABC/Craig Sjodin)

Despite the arduous process, Lindsay is very much head over heels for her future husband. “I love my fiancé,” she said. “I just saw him yesterday. We just finished having our little rendezvous. We called it Happy Couples Weekend… Every time I spend more time with him, it’s even better.”

Lindsay spoke out previously about wedding planning, and she gave a rough timeline of when to expect the nuptials. “In this world, because we’re getting to know each other in a different way, I want to wait at least a year from the time that we got engaged,” she said. “So ideally, I’d like to get married next year, but who knows? We’ll see what happens.”

Her fiance is right there with her. “He’s more of a hopeless romantic than I am!” Lindsay said. “So he wants to wait a year too, but probably sooner. I think he’s just following my lead.”

Lindsay is down to her final three contestants ahead of fantasy suite dates on her season. The remaining suitors, Eric Bigger, Bryan Abasolo and Peter Kraus, will join her family in Dallas for some quality bonding time—or not.

“Next week I’ll be taking them into my family’s home and it is just as nerve-racking,” Rachel wrote in her blog post this week. “My father may be the judge, but the rest of my family can be just as intimidating. You’ll be surprised who they like, who they question and who I have to stick up for. Three men walk into my home and only two leave with a blessing for marriage.”
