Azerbaijan president's daughter slammed online for taking 'shocked' selfies - while he gave UN speech on genocide

A president’s daughter has become a social media laughing stock after being caught posing for selfies – as her dad addressed the United Nations General Assembly.

Azerbaijani strongman Ilham Aliyev, 55, was delivering his big speech to world leaders in New York.

But it his 33-year-old daughter Leyla Aliyeva who is making the headlines as she seemed more concerned with finding the perfect expression for her smartphone, than listening in.

While her dad talked of border conflicts with neighbouring state Armenia, Leyla was filmed pulling shocked and surprised faces for her selfies.

To add to her dad’s embarrassment, her efforts were live-streamed all around the world from the General Assembly.

Leyla is at first seen listening intently to her father’s speech as she sits beside her 53-year-old mother Mehriban in the hall.

But that does not last for long.

Not even two minutes into her dad’s delivery she starts turning her smartphone on herself, to try and capture the perfect shocked expression.

But the incident did not go down well.

As well as her global TV audience, Leyla’s performance has been seen – and mocked – by tens of thousands of watchers on social media.

One – names as ‘Mekhanik’ – said: ‘This is simply lack of culture and stupidity of rich kids. That means that her parents raised her that way.’

And another – identified as ‘zhandos’ – added: ‘That’s so shameful for the family. To make faces like that when her father is talking about genocide…’

Yet another compared Aliyev and his family to the fictional Underwoods in the Netflix drama, ‘House of Cards’.

‘One of the main differences between the #Underwoods & the #Aliyevs: The Underwoods don’t have kids,’ wrote @HaroutChirinian.

Aliyev has been in power since 2003, since taking over control of the energy-rich country from his father.

Azerbaijan used to be a part of the Soviet Union.

Ilham Aliyev’s family also have official roles with the government.

His wife has the title of first Vice President.

The ruling family has long been accused of corruption, with media reports in the past claiming the family owns millions of pounds worth of property in Dubai.
